On November 9, 2011, a delegation of the Senate of the State of Buenos Aires, Argentina, visited the Association of Banks in Lebanon located in Saifi, where she was received by the President of the Association, Dr. Joseph Torbey and some Board Members and its Secretary General Dr. Makram Sader. The Argentina delegation included the head of the Front for Victory, Senator Osvaldo Goicoechea, the Peronist Party leader and his deputy, Senators Alfredo Cesar Makiavi and Senator Julio Aníbal Assaf, the Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Trade, Senator Roberto Asvaldo Fernandes and the consultant to the Argentine Senate, Ms. Alicia Daher. The delegation was accompanied by the Consul of Argentina in Lebanon, Pedro Xavier Alchorron.
The Argentina delegation exposed at the beginning of the meeting the stronger social ties between the people of the two countries where Lebanese diaspora is active and effecient in Argentina; and the importance of the State of Buenos Aires, which accounts 40% of the Argentine economy, and the decentralization in force permits to conclude international agreements, explaining that the state offers diversity of investments in agriculture, irrigation, industry, communications and allows a wide opening to the whole of Latin America. The delegation also wished the enlargement of joint cooperation, calling on the Lebanese banking sector to establish a Lebanese-Argentina bank as well as spreading branches in the state and purchasing obligations to finance projects related to infrastructure.
For his part, Dr. Joseph Torbey welcomed the historic relations between Lebanon and Argentina, as well as the ability of Argentina to emerge from the recent crisis, he also expressed his gratitude for the visit, which the composition of the delegation reflects the sincere and serious interest in the context of joint cooperation, promising to review the proposals submitted by the delegation and the expansion of bilateral economic and financial relations through diplomatic channels and necessary contacts.
