"Water Heroes", a sustainable environmental project, was implemented, as a pilot, by the Lebanese association arcenciel in Antounieh Boarding School (Metn) thanks to the financial support of Banque Libano-Française (BLF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) - Lebanon.
"Water Heroes" was selected by BLF and UNDP - Lebanon in the framework of the annual Earth Card competition, as one of the winners of the 2013 call which targeted projects on water conservation. Its aim was to improve access to safe drinking water, through a water treatment system based on sand and carbon filters, and UV treatment. It also focused on reducing municipal water consumption and water shortages by installing faucet aerators.
In addition, arcenciel launched a "Water Heroes" fun game in partnership with BLF and UNDP to raise awareness on water conservation and to promote responsible consumption behaviors among the youth.
Following the success of the pilot activities that had an impact on the lives of 200 students, teachers and staff, arcenciel will replicate the "Water Heroes" project in more schools across Lebanon.
Within the framework of BLF Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, the Earth Card competition finances green and sustainable projects with parts of the revenues of the MasterCard Earth Card launched in 2011 in partnership with UNDP - Lebanon. The Earth Card was the first card in Lebanon made of eco-friendly material.
In the past four years, the total amount granted to ecological projects through the Earth Card competition reached USD 160,000. The 2016 competition theme is "Solid Waste Management". Details are available on www.eblf.com/green.
